Which e-bike class and type is right for me?
A plain-English guide, and a three-question chooser. It points you to types, not to a single winner.
The three classes
Most U.S. states and rebate programs use a three-class system. These definitions come from Colorado's and Atlanta's official program pages. Your state's law may differ.
| Class 1 | Motor helps only while you pedal, and stops helping at 20 mph. |
|---|---|
| Class 2 | Motor can help without pedaling (a throttle) and stops helping at 20 mph. |
| Class 3 | Motor helps only while you pedal and stops helping at 28 mph. Some places add rules, such as minimum age or helmets (Georgia, for example, requires a helmet for Class 3 and an age over 15, per the Atlanta page). |
Many newer bikes let you switch between classes on the display. Where you can use each class (trails, bike paths, streets) is set by your state, city and the land manager, so check local rules.
Why class and motor size matter for rebates
Programs we track generally accept Class 1, 2 and 3 e-bikes with motors of 750W or less. Some also require UL 2849 or EN 15194 safety certification (Colorado, Connecticut and Ann Arbor say so on their pages). A bike that is faster or more powerful than that, such as an off-road-only model, is usually not covered.
Pick a type
| Type | Good for | Prices we verified |
|---|---|---|
| Commuter | Road-focused bikes with racks, fenders or lights on many models. A good default for city trips. | $1,099 to $4,100 (12 priced of 12) |
| Comfort hybrid | Upright, easy-to-ride bikes for paths and neighborhood streets. | $1,499 to $4,000 (3 priced of 8) |
| Cargo & utility | Longer or sturdier frames for kids, groceries and gear. Heavier and often pricier. | $1,345 to $2,399 (7 priced of 7) |
| Folding | Smaller frames you can fold for stairs, cars and storage. Many are still heavy for a folder. | $895 to $1,899 (5 priced of 5) |
| Fat tire / all-terrain | Wide tires for gravel, sand and snow. Heavier, and slower on pavement. | $1,999 to $1,999 (3 priced of 3) |
| Off-road only | Not a street e-bike. Closer to an electric dirt bike. | No verified prices |
Three-question chooser
This is a rough starting point from the type descriptions above. It does not know your height, hills, local rules or which shops near you take a rebate.
Test ride if you can
Fit, weight and how the motor feels are hard to judge from a spec table. We have not tested these bikes.
